Update

Hey everyone,

Thought I would drop a post on this group blog, just to introduce myself and my progress in trying to quit smoking.

I made the decision to quit in early February, having been a smoker for over five years. Going from smoking one pack a day to nothing at all was a real challenge, especially as I'm in my final semester at university - probably the most stressful period in my life that I have encountered thus far. The first month was the toughest; all my friends would pop outside the pub for a cigarette and I'd be left inside on my own - those are the times when you really feel like giving in. But I persevered and kept focussed. Then came the set-back of having an influx of job rejections (I'm trying to find a graduate job at the moment). However, I stuck to it and didn't give in. Not once. No matter how much I wanted to smoke, I just took a deep breath, and said to myself 'No'.

I now haven't smoked for almost 2 months. I think I'm over the worst of it, but you never know what's round the corner. However, I'm confident of achieving success.

If anyone needs any advice on how to quit - I've come up with a few exercises that might be of help. Let me know if you're interested; I'd be happy to help.

Anyways, hope all is good.

Joey

Interesting that you think after two months that you've cracked it. Personally I went through a hard time at around the three month mark which really puzzled me at the time. Thankfully, I'm over it now and it has been over three years (woohoo!).

Life is so much better without the dreaded weed, I promise you! You can read about my own experience at Help Me Quit Smoking. I hope you'll visit and maybe get some inspiration?

Hi,
I agree with you that it is really tough to quit smoking especially when you are trying to quit and some smokes around you. I have also given up smoking 4 months ago. I made many attempts to quit but every time it was useless. One of my friends suggested me to try Herbal cigarettes to try. He said that herbal cigarettes contain very less nicotine with good amount of herbs. When we smoke herbs and nicotine reaches to our body. Herbs reduce the nicotine level in our body while nicotine inhaled helps to reduce curve for that particular time. Thus these cigarettes help us to reduce our dependency on cigarettes and we can slowly give up the smoking. I tried these cigarettes and i was able to give up smoking completely in 3 months. Not it's been more than 4 months since i have not smoked.

Hi all, thanks for your comments. Laura - how are your attempts going.
Tony - congratulation on not smoking for 3 years. I'm actually on a bit of a downer at the moment (been about 3 momths without cigarettes); really craving one now though. How long did your rough patch last for?

As mentioned, the first exercise I devised was finding the personal trigger that starts my desire for a cigeratte. I realised that I'm mainly craving after a big meal, in particular after eating carbs, so I've devised a 5 small meal programme that is low on carbs and high on meat. Seemed to work okay for me (until this month).

In terms of actual exercises, I found that one of the things I missed the most was having something in my hand, so using a Isokinetic ball can really help with that. You can buy them from here.

All the best,

The fear of going through what many smokers expect to be a horrible experience of quitting only to fail and start smoking again is sometimes enough to keep some smokers from ever even trying to quit

I think that we find ourselves reading about other peoples journey and do talk about the hard part of quiting, not horrible, but hard beause it is. You really have to be ready to quit and quit for the right reasons. You cannot quit for anyone else. It has to be YOU. And non smokers do not understand to get to the place where you can quit is very hard.
I hope that if you are wanting to quit that you keep thinking about it and come up with a plan.
Almost any ex smoker I know said that you will always think about it. It is the same with any addiction I am sure. think about an alcoholic, they must struggle but they still do not drink or if they do they stop again and then hopefully got to meetings.. support group.
Hope this made since I am on my first cup of coffee and about to take son to school.. just wanted to be supportive and positive =)

Have you ever tried an Electronic Cigarette? They give you the same sensation and behavior as smoking, you still get the nicotine that you are addicted to, but none of the harmful toxins of regular cigarettes? The best part is that you can naturally wean yourself off of nicotine because the nicotine cartridges come in different strengths, even no nicotine.
We have had many, many success stories.
We also have Electronic Cigars.
You ought to give them a try.

After 10 years of smoking Marlboro, I finally quit just last year. A dear friend of mine had introduced to me to the Ecstacy® Red Cigarettes from www.salvianmore.com. The Ecstacy® Red Cigarettes, provide the smoker with a full flavored more traditional tobacco-like aroma and taste. There is no tobacco, no chemical, no nicotine, and harmful chemicals. They're an excellent choice for those looking for a tobacco-free cigarette. For Peer Pressure the Ecstacy® Red Cigarettes is a great replacement to the Marlboro, Winston, and Camel Filters. They’re worth checking out! www.salvianmore.com

Guys and gals I hear you all from the four corners of this blog and being addicted sucks. I’ve been a smoker for 15 years and tried everything to quit. …gum, patch, herbals, zyban… I even tried to cut back. Well I’m sure you folks are hearing about the electric cigarette. Well I’ve tried it and at freesmokeless, it’s the cheapest and most advance design available. I can smoke everywhere with this thing …especially at work and on planes. Do your research and you’ll see for yourself. A built in atomizer in each cartridge and I only spend a 1/3 of the cost of what I do when I smoked. Make sure you get the two piece design with the built in atomizer in each cartridge or else you’ll end up having to buy more atomizers. Freesmokeless provides the cartridges with the built in atomizers. This is a great way to cut back or even quit all together. This is by far the best quit smoking device I ever tried….check it out,,, you will not regret it. I always said, if there was a product that looks, taste, and feels like a cigarette, but not with all the harmful chemicals and tobacco,,, I’d rush to be the first to buy it (I really wasn’t the first..hee hee). So initially I cut back by only smoking at home. Since I couldn’t smoke in the house, I ended up smoking more of this e-cig than regular cigs. So the long and the short of it is, I just flipped the switch and went a much healthier way of ‘smoking’ and gave up the real cigs. Oh yeah by the way, I’m going to wean myself off of the nicotine with their tier level nicotine cartridges so yes I’m not totally free yet, but I gotta admit, this thing is way too cool.

Hi, I was literally a chains smoker for 7-8 years till June-2009. It was really an uncompromising job for me to quit smoking. My friends and family always used to yell at me for this bad habit. In May-2009 on of my colleague referred me to one of the website to quit smoking. Its https://habitchanger.com they offer a very good and exceptional method to quit smoking. I followed the program and it worked for me. It’s like getting a new life after I quit smoking. Thanks to https://habitchanger.com.

The medical science wants the whole world to quit smoking.. One has to be very strong to quit smoking if he has been dependent on smoking for years. It requires is a great deal of effort and determination.

The main thing by which the smoker can stop smoking is to really believe in the power of support. You need not expect an instant miracle as this may not be possible.

The smoking effects started in our life’s when we first inhaled nicotine. After this first attempt itself, smoking starts to show its damaging effect. This damaging effect continues for the rest of our life. You cannot go back to the past, but can certainly restore a bright future by quitting smoking. Sometimes, we feel we cannot quit smoking. You can be right. For this, you need to get the perfect support, which you can find at http:habitchanger.com. I am trying to quit with the help of this program. So far so good..will report back the results shortly.

I've been almost 5 years smoke free after smoking for 20 years. I feel proud of it. It didn't happen overnight though and it took me more than one try and more than one technique before I quit smoking, but I did. And that's what matters.

It's neat. Each story I read is so different, yet all the same- each person is up against the same battle. Quitting smoking is a challenge and there are so many different ways to do it. It's the most important thing you will ever do for yourself, so its worth it to try and try again until you quit. And one day, if you stick it out, it will be a distant memory. I promise. So, I want to help by sharing my story with people.

You can view how I stopped smoking at my website and maybe it will give you some ideas on how to stop smoking. Good luck! Once you do, you will feel so much better. And you will feel like you can accomplish anything!

I started Chantix last week and today is day 9. I have been smoke free for two days. I hvae difficulty sleeping and in each dream I am smoking. My stomach is upset and I feel like a fish out of water. I have tried to quit smoking since 1990 and have continued to fail. It really stinks cause I usually can accomplish anything. I quit smoking three years ago for 2 months and all it took was one puff to fail. This may not be the best time to quit. I am in the last semester of grad school but I feel if I can accomplish that I can stop smoking. Why is this so difficult.

Having been a smoker for 18 years (slightly more than half of my life), the previous 2 attempts to quit failed within 2 days and that was with substitutes like the patch/gum.

This time I had time to ponder over the approach rather than getting up one morning and trying to do it.
As the first step, I moved to ultra lights cigarettes. Made an effort not to increase the number of cigarettes a day (8-10 a day smoker). Even this was a challenge as I had headaches, uneasiness, mild fever etc for a few days and then it stabilized. Followed this for a month or so.

As smoking is more habitual even after one has got nicotine out of the system, second step was to take a hard look at my day smoking.
There were some smokes I HAD to have and passionate about. The morning smoke with coffee, after lunch walk, etc.
For the next month I made a conscious effort not to smoke at those times. I.e had my morning coffee without a cigarette and then waited atleast 30 minutes before I lit up a cigarette. Noticed that over the next month the number of cigarettes per day went down to about 6 from the 8-10 (though there were some days where they were 10-12 a day too).
Started doing physical activity like running/tennis etc too on the side.

And then one fine day when I was driving to get cigarettes, decided not to.
Stopped by the grocery store and picked up gum, cranberry juice and fresh fruit. Came back home, got rid of the ashtray/lighters etc.
Drank a lot of water next few days and did a lot of outdoors stuff with deep breathing, running, yoga etc.
Almost threw in the towel the 4th day ..but somehow managed. Been 5 1/2 months now smoke free and will be running the half marathon next month which I am excited about.
Don't crave the nicotine anymore but it is like losing a friend ..So do hold a pen which i treat like a cigarette when i feel like it.

Good luck to all ..First week is tough no doubt but gets better considerably after that.

I am 20 and have been smoking since I was 16. My mother is 49 this year and has also been smoking since she was 16. I found this product that has helped both her and I quit smoking traditional cigarettes entirely. It's the electric cigarette from greensmoke. It is a battery run "cigarette" that looks and feels like you are smoking a regular tobacco cigarette, but without any of the chemicals, tar, ash and odour! The tip of the "cigarette" really lights up and when you exhale you breathe out what looks like cigarette smoke (It is actually just water vapour and some flavour). So you still get the illusion of smoking. You recharge the cigarette by plugging it into your computer, your electrical socket in the wall, or even your car!

There are quite a few brands of electric cigarettes out there. But in my research and trials I have found greensmoke to be the most "real" and satisfying product. My sister bought a cheap version on-line and I tried it when I went to go visit her and hardly any "smoke" comes out and it wasn't satisfying at all! and guess what! she's still a smoker so it obviously hasn't worked for her either. I will have to introduce her to this now that I've have found a good product.

How it works is instead of "burning" the nicotine like a traditional cigarette. The e-cigarette contains an atomizer that vaporizes the nicotine instead. So you still get your nicotine hit. The greensmoke electric cigarette comes in a few flavours including Tobacco, chocolate, vanilla, apple, coffee and strawberry. It also comes in different strengths just like a regular cigarette so you can get 8mg or 6mg or 16mg etc.

In the long run you also save money. The initial purchase of the battery part is $49.95 American. and then you need a charger etc. You can simply purchase the starter pack for about $150 American and it includes 2 electronic cigarettes, the charger and 5 extra cartridges (the filter part). The e-cigarette is under warranty as well so all you ever need to replace is the filter cartridges which last about as long as a packet of cigarettes. They cost about $15 American for a pack of 5. That's equivalent to roughly 5 packs of cigarettes which would usually cost you around $60!! So it works out to be a lot cheaper.

This site has more information,

www.greensmoke.com/LBP

and if you want to buy one you can also buy it there. Give it a go. I did and am now a proud non-smoker :)

I’ve been smoking for 44 years now and have tried multiple was to quit to no avail. I’d quit for a time, just to be drawn back to that cigarette. I’ve even incorporated pills with gum and pills with lozenges’, but have always returned back to the comfort and enjoyment of cigarettes. I guess I needed to face the facts: I enjoy smoking even though I know the risk of breathing in tar and smoke from burning tobacco and paper along with over 400 other carcinogens that come in a pack of cigarettes.
As Mark Twain said: "Quitting smoking is easy; I've done it a thousand times,"
What’s a smoker to do? You’ve heard the medical statistics and the grumbling from others over your habit, but you just want to be left alone with the freedom you once enjoyed in your favorite brand of smokes. You try quitting, cold turkey. You become irritable and edgy and no matter what you just can’t shake the urge to just go have a puff; so what do you do? You kind of flinch every time you buy them, because the price just keeps going up and up: They were only 25 cents a pack when you started, and now they are over $5.00 a pack; some just under $7.00.
OK; now you’ve committed to seeing the Doctor: The problem is more than you alone can handle, so you set out for Medical advice and the latest and greatest prescription drugs. You try it, but the urge is too great to bear; so you stumble around with every known cure the Doctor throws at you. You try this pill, then that pill and then you try pills along with supplements like gum or lozenges’; you opt for the patch, but everything you do seems utterly hopeless. You start smoking again and again; trying this remedy to that remedy, but you always drift back to the comfort and enjoyment you get from your little cylindrical smoking stick.
You know it makes no logical sense to roll up a dried piece of vegetation in paper and set fire to one end while you draw the smoke from the other end into your lungs. You have visions of the Jerry Lewis movie [Visit to a Small Planet (1960)] where in his innocence he lights up a pack of smokes in trying to understand humans and their habits. You can’t even understand why you do it any longer, but you know that when you go through another bout of doing without you already feel doomed to another failure.
My sister sent an electronic cigarette to my mother who is already on Albuterol breathing treatments, but can’t give up the cigarettes after much longer than the 44 years I’m dealing with. While on a visit I tried her E-Cig and was amazed at the volume of smoke and the strength of the vapor I could drawl from something that didn’t burn, produce ash or smell anything like a cigarette. After researching the brand of E-Cig my sister had sent to Mom, I opted for one that was of a far better price and one that was touted on the blogs as having the best battery [key element] on the market {LeCig}: I could choose the strength I wanted in mg nicotine and the flavor I wanted as well.
I ordered my LeCig in February and haven’t had a carcinogen laden tobacco cylinder since. I’ve saved over $600.00 dollars so far just in the difference in the price of regular cigarettes v/s E-cigs and my wife along with my Doctor think its one of the best choices I’ve made so far in my quest to quit. I started out at 24mg nicotine and have stepped down to 16mg and now at 11 mg. At the rate I’m going now I’ll be vaping away at 0mg nicotine by Christmas.
This is such a healthy alternative to cigarettes that I think it will just be a matter of time before Doctors and insurance companies start offering it along with the other cessation products to participants trying to quit the bad habit of lighting fire to one end of the vegetable matter carcinogen laden cylinder and breathing in the smoke from the other end.
Once you think about it; it all makes sense!

Hi everyone
Congrats on your attempts to quit smoking - I myself am in week 2 of no cigarettes.
I tried te Champix tablets this time last year and if I had to pinpoint one reason I failed it was because I allowed myself to have that one drag when I was drunk. It didn't lead back into my old smoking routine for a few months but before I knew it I was there, back to my 15 a day habit. This time I am back on the champix again and i know myself I cannot ever have another puff. I certainly don't want to go through what I have been through in the last 2 weeks ever again!! Sleeplessness, grumpiness, tired all the time. This time is it. I deserve better - so do you so keep it up! Your body will love you for it

Great blog Joey - thanks.

I'm an ex-smoker - occasionally, even now I indulge in the fantasy of a cigarette and a glass of wine, sitting out on a sunny terrace somewhere, but I would never make it become a reality, as I know the benefits of becoming a non-smoker far out way any short-term pleasure.

Quit smoking is finding an effective way to help get rid of their nicotine addiction. Saying you want to quit is a lot easier than actually breaking free of this unhealthy habit.Herbal cigarettes have even been designed for people to use when they want to conquer their smoking addiction. These will allow you to satisfy those oral cravings without developing that nicotine habit.

Great blog, lot of useful information....It believe it is important to share experiences and the various methods, techniques people are using to stop smoking. I smoked for 33 years. The most important thing is to make the decision on one’s own accord and stick to it. Scare tactics and being pushed by family and friends does not help...it makes it even harder to quit. I tried to stop on a number of occasions, not because of myself or because I WANTED but to please my family, and naturally I failed each time. Each failure made it harder and harder to try again. I stopped a year ago, using hypnosis for stopping smoking, after my family finally gave up pushing me....and when I made the decision. Thank god for hypnosis.

But, as much as i wanted to stop smoking I just couldn't let it go instantly. A friend of mine suggested me to use electronic cigarettes instead of traditional cigarette. He recommended me the products of Smokebot Electronic Cigarette. They are not harmful compared to traditional cigarettes because they have no harmful substances. The majority of quitting smoking is your mindset. If you are not in it to win it, then smoking will ultimately win. It has to be your #1 priority above everything else in life. If it's not, then you won't take it seriously. You have to want to quit. That's the bottom line. Once you know you want to quit, cold turkey is the only way to go. You can read about my personal struggles and what it truly took to overcome them at iQuit-Smoking.com. Maybe I can help you.

Just stumbled acoss this site and thought I would leave my story
I’m a 41 year old male and only 8 days ago suffered a massive heart attack, fortunately i am here to tell my story.

When arriving at the hospital I already knew I was having a heart attack and the paramedics done a fantastic job with me and took me stright into the hospital to have a stent fitted to my main artery in the heart, so in short woke up at 5am having a massive heart attack and by 7am had been whisked away to hospital and had stent fitted, paramedics, nurses and doctors have done their job, now the rest is up to me.

I have smoked 20+ cigarrettes a day since I was 12 sometimes closer to 40 a day, now no one has said to me my heart attack is a direct result of smoking, more probably it was in my genes, my mother died at 45 with a massive heart attack(she had no illnesses leading up to the event), my father had a massive heart attck when he was 58 (thankfully my dad survived and is still with us), on my fathers side he lost his mother and 1 brother to heart attack and 1 firther brother who had a heart attack and is still with us) so I would bet on having an attack whether I smoked or not.

But now I need to make massive lifestylle changes if I want to be here for a while.
No one asked me or inferred I shoud give up smoking but within 3 hours of the attack my mind was made up, now I know its easy to make that decision while lying on a hospital bed, it is not likely a nurse will come up and give you a cigarrette with your breakfast etc. The single biggest thing that gets me through the struggle of the withdrawal symptons, is that I promised my 2 boys aged 5 and 3 I would do everthing I humanly possibly can to prevent any further attacks. The only thing I am trying is just now is the nicotine patches, which I would say are quite good, tried the gum but after taking the first one found it quite disgusting, I think because I tasted the nicotine in my mouth.

So in essence what I am saying probably is first and foremost you need the will power then support of your family followed by any NRT that works.

My boys have been instructed that if they ever ever see their dad with a dirty smoky thing at his mouth they have to say “Daddy do it for me”

And just remember “If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again”

Good luck to all my fellow quiters

The easiest way to stop smoking is by using a nicotine alternative that you can control the nicotine level you are exposed to and reduce down from your starting point. This will allow you to overcome the withdrawals from the other ingredients found in cigarettes while allowing your body time to acclimate to the changes. Use an electronic cigarette to get your nicotine and your fixation of having something in your hands and you can find more information on Electronic Cigarettes and E Liquids, visit ABSolute Vapors.

Hi Joey, thank you for the very uplifting and inspiring post. There have been people very close to me who want to quit smoking as well, but don't know where to start or find it very hard to start or continue their treatments. They key is to just keep trying and believe in yourself, dominate your addiction and do NOT let your addiction dominate you. Believe it or not, a very helpful and natural remedy is to undergo hypnosis, to bring out the part of you that WANTS to quit smoking and make it dominate the addiction to the substance. One of the sources I've seen my friend have success with is Natural Hypnosis, http://www.naturalhypnosis.com?l=447470, and I hope it may help all of you who read this as well. I also have a blog about hypnosis, if any of you are interested: http://doeshypnosis.blogspot.com
