A Year Without Cigarettes

May 21st marked a full year without cigarettes.

How am I doing? I didn't think about it until May 23rd.

The freedom from smoking has changed my life. I could sit here and tell you about being able to hustle up stairs, or that my clothes don't stink or how good food tastes, but in reality the biggest thing about being smoke-free, aside from physical health, is purely psychological - I am free from an addiction. My life no longe revolves around smoking. That speaks louder than anything else.

I plum forgot about my one-year anniversary because I simply don't think about smoking much anymore. Occasionally the topic will cross my mind, usually when talking to another smoker who also wants to quit. I tell them what they've heard is true - you have to want to quit. You have to want it more than anything else. Most people who smoke like smoking, even if they really can't see why anymore. The satisfaction factor for their cravings has earned the title of "something I like to do".

I no longer think about when my next break is, or if I can sneak out between breaks to catch a smoke. I don't have to remember to suck one down before a movie, or a dinner out. No more standing in bad weather, or cracking the car window. Its not that the cessation of these activities is a big deal in and of themselves, its that I don't even think about doing them. It's natural to not do them.

A few days ago, I walked out of a diner where a couple of men were standing outside, and one remarked that he was going to ask me for a light but I didn't look like someone who smoked. Wow!, I thought in my head. Something else I hadn't considered - people who smoke generally look like people who smoke. That comment made my whole day - I was telling friends "hey, I don't look like I smoke" (of course, there's always the wise cracker who says "yeah, but you're still ugly").

So, unless I have a relapse - and I don't see it happening - you likely wont hear from me again. Since I don't smoke, and I don't think about smoking, I've simply run out of things I can say about it. And that's great - not having a thing to say about smoking, because it's so not part of who I am and what I do.

I am an ex-smoker. I hope all of you reach your one-year anniversary and become true ex-smokers, too.

A wholly pleasing reading experience you are having visiting this blog. I've noticed exceptional definitions and articles this blog provides. I enjoy the logo of the site. I adore the speed at which the site is updated. Enjoying the fact how this site confers an option to everyone to have an opinion. No abbreviation in the site and that makes it easy to understand. Quick references to everything I need in the blog that's what I love. The posts are brief and accurate. There's a positive feel about the site that i like awfully. Congratulations!

I quit December 31st of 2001. The best gift I ever gave myself and I NEVER take it for granted. It was a choice between breathing or smoking. I love breathing!

Best to you! Viveca

I'm still not smoking and I almost can't believe I get to write that sentence! I tried EVERY aid out there...nicotine gum, hypnosis, acupuncture, meetings, therapy etc...

Nothing worked for more than a day (and I do mean a miserable 24 hours) until I tried the patch. It just clicked for me. I think that not knowing anyone who smokes any longer was a huge part of it. My last smoking friend quit a month before I did and that was such an inspiration.

Oddly enough, I've also lost 6 lbs. I suddenly had all this time to fill and found myself taking walks. The freedom of being a non-smoker after a 2 pack a day habit for 18 years is a revelation...I only get a craving now once a week or so and it only lasts a few seconds. Keep trying, if I can do it, ANYONE can!

What great advice for anyone truly wanting to quit. I've heard about hypnosis to quit smoking and skeptical about it maybe because some say you have to first be a willing subject to actually be hypnotized.

I smoked not because I was stressed but because most in my military unit was doing it and it seemed the fad if you will at the time.

Cold turkey was my method because I played sports and noticed a decline in breathing during workouts. Anyway Kudos to all who conquer the habit.

I really liked this post. I've been off the smokes for two weeks now (with patches) which is the longest I've ever made it. I really want to get to the same point you have..where I don't think about smoking..at all. I don't want to keep thinking things like "when can I have my next one? When is the next break. Will this activity interfere with my smoking for a long period?" etc etc. I want to make those thoughts go away. I still have very bad moments during the day, but have found the intensity of craving growing less every day. I like to think that in less than a year, I too can be not thinking about smoking. Thanks!

I think it's great that you finally finished with cigarettes for good. Yes, it is great when you realize that you don't smoke, and it just came to you because you forgot that you ever were a smoker. I quit smoking
almost 7 years ago after smoking for about 7 years. I became increasingly
disgusted with smoking and this eventually led to me kicking this very unhealthy
habit. The thing I noticed most after stopping was how much time I had spent
smoking. I started to get a lot more done per day. But you really do need a
strong reason to quit, without strong enough motivation the physical addiction
is just to strong. It is the mind that has to conquer the bodies addiction. BTW
I quit cold turkey.. good luck all.

Good Job!! But remember that triggers will be there the rest of your life.

It's very important you stop when having a trigger, to figure out what caused it in the first place. Remember in times of stressful events that you mind will ask you for help in relaxing, all these years you have used the cigarette to give you permission to breathe. Every puff you took was a deep breath and was 80% oxygen; you may try using an aroma therapy oil to give you that same permission to breath.
You must break all the associations you have made in your life time as a smoker, to avoid futur triggars and lighting up again

The addiction of smoking is due to Nicotine. Nicotine is the drug in tobacco that causes addiction. It is absorbed and enters the bloodstream, through the lungs when smoke is inhaled, and through the lining of the mouth (buccal mucosa) when tobacco is chewed or used as oral snuff or for non-inhaled pipe and cigar smoking.

This article just to give you kind of restriction. Whenever you are smoking & you get to that line, you know it time to stop. Light up the other smokeless cigarette and do same thing. Keep buying packs of cigarettes but make sure you do this. For every pack of cigarettes that you buy, increase length of the line closer to end of each and every stick. Continue to do until you finally quit.

That's already a huge achievement! A year without something that you're addicted to takes quite an amazing level of endurance and perseverance! That's good. At least you've freed yourself from health risks and teeth problems. As we all know, smoking affects the teeth, too. Those dentists Knoxville has would always ask their patients if they smoke. They'd tell the patients to stop altogether because not only does it affect the smoker, but the ones around the smoker as well.

I hope you gave up smoking forever. Giving up tobacco stops teeth becoming stained, and you'll have fresher breath. Ex-smokers are less likely than smokers to get gum disease and lose their teeth prematurely. Scientific studies show that people's stress levels are lower after they stop smoking. Nicotine addiction makes smokers stressed from the ‘withdrawal’ between cigarettes. The pleasant feeling of satisfying that craving is only temporary and is not a real cure for stress. Also, the improved levels of oxygen in the body means that ex-smokers can concentrate better and have increased mental wellbeing. Kicking the smoking habit gives your senses of smell and taste a boost. The body is recovering from being dulled by the hundreds of toxic chemicals found in cigarettes. Thanks.

It's tough to quit smoking; staying smokefree is a major accomplishment. Make sure you're rewarding yourself. Now that you're not buying cigarettes anymore, you might have extra money to buy a small treat. But your reward doesn't have to cost anything! Enjoy a nice hike now that you can breathe easier, or invite a friend over for movie night. Thanks.

Jordan L. said...

You can abstain from smoking for years, but if you never change the relationship you have with cigarettes, the chains will continue to hold you tight. Change the way you think and you can free yourself in an instant. You'll still have to do the work to undo the years of habit of course, but once you free your mind, you're on your way. Thanks.

My favorite part is how you explain the way that after a while, you just don't even think about smoking anymore. When you first quit, you're always thinking, "I'm not smoking. I'm not smoking anymore." The thing is...it's getting to that point where you don't smoke and don't think about it.
